This volume presents the discipline 's best thinking on sustainability in written, drawn, and built form, drawing on over fifteen years of peer-reviewed essays and national design awards published by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA). Providing a primer on sustainability, useful to teachers and students alike, the selected essays address a broad range of issues. Combined with design projects that highlight issues holistically, they promote an understanding of the principles of sustainability and further the integration of sustainable methods into architectural projects. Using essays that alternately revise and clarify twentieth century architectural thinking, The Green Braid places sustainability at the centre of excellent architectural design. No other volume addresses sustainability within the context of architectural history, theory, pedagogy and design, making this book an ideal source for architects in framing their practices, and therefore their architectural production, in a sustainable manner.
A boxed set in four volumes, each volume in the series represents a
core sample of the firm at this moment in time, highlighting a
grouping of four major projects that share a common theme but not
necessarily the same typology or program. The themes are threads
that weave the work together and as a whole define the design
philosophy of the firm. The firm's emphasis on sustainability is a
current that runs through the narrative of each book. Each book
focuses on design process and collaboration. Each project is
presented in depth and will underscore the methodology, aesthetics,
techniques and ethos of the firm. With future volumes planned,
these sets will track the progression of ideas that evolve over
time through the work that enacts the ideas, and informs the work
to come.

"After the Deluge" serves as a demonstration of the practical imagination applied to the ecology of water. Taking Leonardo da Vinci's "deluge" drawings of catastrophic floods as its starting point, and inspired by his lifelong study of all aspects of water, the dialogues in this book gather together artists and scientists to discuss the fluidity, rising, contamination, and disappearance of water. Creative expression is examined in fields as diverse as art history, musical composition, architecture, painting, biology, infectious diseases, civil engineering, and fluid dynamics. This beautifully illustrated book also documents the exhibition "Aquiferious Virginia," which accompanied the dialogues. Distributed for the University of Virginia School of Architecture
